Gadsden State Community College marked a new chapter for its Surgical Technology program with a ribbon cutting and open house Monday, April 27, at 5 p.m. on the Ayers Campus in Anniston.

The event showcased the college’s investment in hands-on health sciences training and gave visitors a chance to tour the program’s updated lab space, meet faculty and learn more about career pathways in surgical technology.

The Surgical Technology program prepares students for roles in the operating room, where they assist surgeons, nurses and other medical professionals during surgical procedures. The program includes classroom instruction and practical, skills-based training aimed at meeting workforce demands in the region.

“This program represents Gadsden State’s continued commitment to providing high-quality, workforce-focused education,” President Alan Smith said. “By expanding opportunities in health sciences, we are helping students prepare for meaningful careers while supporting the healthcare needs of our community. This program not only equips students with critical, hands-on skills, but also reflects the strong partnerships we have built with healthcare providers to ensure our training aligns with real workforce needs and industry standards.”

The open house was open to the public. Guests toured the lab, interacted with instructors and students, and learned more about enrollment and program requirements.

The ribbon cutting was part of a full evening of activities on the Ayers Campus. A State of the College address followed at 6 p.m. in the Cheaha Lecture Hall, where Smith shared updates on enrollment growth, program expansion and recent accomplishments, highlighting the college’s continued momentum and impact across the region.
