Look at your most recent invoices and chances are good you’ll see one thing you hadn’t noticed before. Software’s “AI Tax” has been in play for a while now, with business owners unknowingly paying for it. There is an AI capability added into a current subscription. Following this addition there is a price hike for the original subscription that was often overlooked or poorly communicated. Spending on AI-Native Tools went up 108% from last year according to Zylo’s 2026 SaaS Management Index. More disturbing is the amount of waste. Approximately 36% of all SaaS Licenses sit idle. Seventy-eight percent of the organizations surveyed reported surprise bills due to the addition of an AI capability and larger companies spend approximately $19.8 million per year due to underutilized software.

A small business doesn’t have a budget for this level of expense. However, there are still some parallels. The price of a $50 CRM goes up to $75. Project tools go from $30 to $45. An email tool with a price tag of $20 is now $35. This translates to an additional cost of $200 to $400 each month for AI software subscriptions for companies that use 10 to 15 different tools, many of which will never provide any measurable benefit. Global spending on AI is expected to be around $2.52 trillion by 2026, with many of those dollars being quietly added into the cost of SaaS AI pricing, and also adding hidden AI fees in all SaaS.
