Google Translate added an interactive pronunciation trainer to help learners compare and refine their speech. Try the feature to get instant AI feedback and phonetic tips.
Google Translate is celebrating the service’s 20th anniversary by launching a new pronunciation practice feature that the company calls one of the most popular among users.
Currently, the feature is available only on Android and only for English, Spanish, and Hindi in the United States and India.
If this option is available in your version, a Practice button will appear at the bottom of the app, allowing you to either ‘pronounce’ what you translated, or ‘listen’ to how native speakers pronounce it.
How it works
If you choose ‘pronounce’, Translate listens to your voice and, with the help of artificial intelligence, analyzes how you pronounced the words, after which it provides instant feedback. The service then shows the phonetic spelling of how a particular word should sound. In Google’s example, the Spanish word for juice sounds with the English ‘j’ sound instead of how it would be pronounced under Spanish rules. So Translate displays this as ‘HU-go’ in its pronunciation variant.
Impact and statistics
The company emphasizes that about a third of mobile users use Translate for practicing speaking and listening to carry real conversations, and this new feature could substantially help with that.
Google also cited other figures: the service currently supports over 250 languages, including some extinct and indigenous languages, and has over 1 billion monthly users who translate more than 1 trillion words each month.
Summary
The new pronunciation-practice feature in Google Translate demonstrates how artificial intelligence can support real language interactions and broaden users’ capabilities in everyday communication.
