The European Union will seek from Google’s parent company, Alphabet, to provide equal opportunities for other artificial intelligence chatbots on the Android system, where Gemini is the «default».
According to Bloomberg, EU regulators are ready to outline their requirements for the company so that ChatGPT or Anthropic products have the same access to features on Android as Google’s Gemini.
This move is dictated by the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which sets a number of rules for the actions of large technology companies, and which has already drawn the ire of the White House for «an unfair attack on American companies.»
The EU, according to the publication, aims to pressure Google to redesign its services in a way that allows competing AI companies to access key features of the Android operating system.
The point is that competing AI services should be given an equally effective level of access to Android features, such as voice activation and certain search tools, as well as the ability to integrate competing AI apps with other Android software.
As dev.ua previously reported, Google now requires Android developers to verify their identity, otherwise they will lose the ability to download applications from third-party sources.
In addition, Google will make it more difficult to install apps from unknown sources on Android and will introduce a new check.
