Instagram is officially spinning off its ‘Shots’ feature into a standalone app, though I’m not exactly sure who it is for.
The app is essentially a Snapchat equivalent, and while Threads could somewhat thrive because of the X/Twitter hate, I’m not sure if a similar Snapchat exodus will take place.

The arrival of the app, named Instants, was first pointed out by ‘social media consultant’ Matt Navarra on Threads. I tried to download it on both Android and iOS, but the app appears to be unavailable in Canada, at least for now.
Despite that, the listing makes it very (very) clear what the app is all about. It’s a Snapchat alternative, but, in 2026.
