AlmaLinux Comments On California Age Verification Law

The RHEL-derived AlmaLinux is the latest Linux distribution commenting on the recent age verification laws led by California with their Digital Age Assurance Act.

AlmaLinux as most in the open-source/Linux world do not like California’s DAAA legislation that is set to begin in 2027. As for how they plan to deal with this law in California and progressing in other US states too, they say: “we are going to wait and see how this plays out.”

They are planning to wait and see how legal challenges play out and other activity within the court system. They are also waiting to see how the likes of Fedora and Red Hat Enterprise Linux address (or not) the requirements of this law.

Presumably they’ll likely end up following whatever is done upstream in RHEL.

Separately, Carl Richell as the CEO of System76 provided an update on the Colorado Age Attestation bill. He posted on X that in the latest revisions to this Colorado state bill, open-source operating systems and open-source apps are excluded. So far code repositories and containers excluded from that Colorado legislation.
