  • The x402 protocol is moving under the Linux Foundation’s umbrella.
  • The solution will scale and expand with the participation of many partners.
  • Governance of the standard is moving to a neutral party — the x402 Foundation.

The nonprofit Linux Foundation announced the creation of the x402 Foundation. The x402 protocol was developed by Coinbase in partnership with Cloudflare to simplify microtransactions and enable payments between AI agents.

The standard was introduced in May 2025. The idea behind the x402 protocol is to embed payment operations into HTTP messages. More details:

In its press release, the Linux Foundation, which supports open-source software, announced the launch of the x402 Foundation unit. It is expected to drive the protocol’s development and broader adoption.

Cloudflare, Stripe, Amazon Web Services, Coinbase, Circle, the Solana Foundation, and others have already joined the x402 Foundation.

Moving the protocol under the Linux Foundation’s umbrella means the solution becomes neutral — with no centralized control — industry-wide, and fully open. A similar model is used by solutions such as Kubernetes, Hyperledger, and OpenAPI.

“The internet was built on open protocols. The x402 Foundation will create an open, community-governed platform to develop these capabilities in the open, ensuring they evolve with transparency, interoperability, and broad participation across the ecosystem,” said Linux Foundation Executive Director Jim Zemlin.

Interest in x402 is driven by the trend toward the so-called agent economy. It is a system in which AI carries out all actions, including payments.

According to various experts, the traditional banking system is not suited for these purposes. Several companies and teams are working on building “rails” for AI payments.

For example, in February 2026, the MoonPay platform unveiled its solution — MoonPay…
