WhatsApp is introducing new features aimed at reducing differences between Android devices and iPhones, with parent company Meta rolling out multi-account support for iOS alongside improved cross-platform chat transfer capabilities.
The company stated that iPhone users will now be able to operate two separate WhatsApp accounts simultaneously on a single device, a feature that had been available on Android since October 2023. The update is being rolled out globally and is expected to reach users in phases.
The addition of multi-account functionality removes the need for iPhone users to maintain two separate devices for different accounts. Users can switch between accounts by tapping on their profile image, in a manner similar to switching profiles on Instagram. The feature allows users to manage distinct conversations, such as separating personal and professional communications.
The company also outlined the process for setting up and switching between accounts on iPhones in a step-by-step format:
Step 1: Tap on the Settings option within the app interface.
Step 2: Tap the plus icon next to the user’s name and select the Add Account option.
Step 3: Tap Agree and Continue to accept the platform’s policies.
Step 4: Select the country and enter the phone number associated with the new account.
Step 5: Tap Continue to receive a verification code and enter the six-digit code provided.
Step 6: Enter the name for the second profile and proceed by tapping Next.
Step 7: Add a profile photo and complete the remaining details to finalise the account setup.
To switch between accounts, users need to access the Settings menu and select the alternate account listed alongside their profile.
In addition to multi-account support, WhatsApp has introduced an update to simplify chat transfers between devices. While the platform had enabled chat migration from Android to iPhone in June 2022, the reverse process—from iPhone to Android—had not been supported until now.
