A reputed Weibo leak suggests Apple is trialing a much larger 200MP telephoto sensor, hinting at a big camera upgrade for upcoming iPhone models.

Apple is considering introducing a 200-megapixel sensor with a telephoto lens in future iPhones.

In today’s post, it is claimed that Apple is actively testing a 200-megapixel sensor sized 1/1.2″, similar to what has been discussed for the upcoming Oppo Find X9 Ultra.

In the already released Find X9 Pro, Oppo presented a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto lens with a large 1/1.56″ sensor, which is significantly larger than typical zoom cameras. Earlier discussions suggested that the future Ultra would feature an even larger-form-factor sensor – 1/1.28″.

Context and comparison with competitors

The claim drew significant attention. In January, it was said that 200-megapixel sensors were discussed in Apple’s supply chain but had not appeared in engineering prototypes. At that time, development was reportedly focused on refining existing 48-megapixel systems.

In January, there were reports that Apple is working on bringing a 200-megapixel camera to the iPhone as early as 2028.

In 2023, Samsung introduced a 200-megapixel rear camera in the Galaxy S23 Ultra, and later models also offered this option. A 200-megapixel iPhone would be able to shoot with greater detail: the higher resolution would allow taking highly detailed shots and printing larger-format images without quality loss.

Prospects and timeline

The standard iPhone 18 is expected in 2027 as part of a new cycle of lineups, with the next Pro models following on the usual September schedule. The coming year may also mark the 20th anniversary of the iPhone, which could appear as a Pro-equivalent or a premium variant, similar to the iPhone X.

How quickly Apple will adopt the 200-megapixel sensor in its next generations will depend on technical challenges and supply chains, but interest in increasing image detail remains high. Apple’s camera development…
