Oshkosh announced the launch of a new artificial intelligence-enabled technology designed to detect material contamination in real time during refuse and recycling collection, marking a significant step toward more data-driven and sustainable waste management operations across North America.
The solution was developed by Oshkosh’s McNeilus Truck and Manufacturing business in collaboration with Lixo, a company specializing in waste-stream analysis. It combines artificial intelligence, edge computing, and cloud-based analytics to identify contaminants as materials are collected.
Using computer vision and machine learning, the system can recognize more than 80 types of contaminants with high accuracy, including plastic bags, yard waste, textiles, and hazardous materials. By analyzing materials as they are deposited into collection vehicles, the technology provides real-time visibility into waste streams.
This capability is expected to help waste haulers and municipalities reduce contamination levels, improve recycling efficiency, and meet environmental and regulatory goals. The system also enables organizations to divert more waste from landfills while optimizing operational performance.
The technology is available both as a factory-installed option on new McNeilus vehicles and as a retrofit kit for existing fleets. It also integrates with McNeilus’ ClearSky Intelligence telematics platform, allowing users to view contamination insights alongside broader fleet and operational data.
