In a surprising reversal of privacy trends, Instagram has decided to discontinue its support for end-to-end encryption (E2EE). While Meta previously highlighted the implementation of E2EE across its platforms like WhatsApp and Instagram as a major security milestone, the social network is now moving in the opposite direction.

Rather than issuing a formal announcement or a public blog post, Instagram chose to quietly update its help documentation. The revised text indicates that E2EE functionality will no longer be available after May 8.

According to the updated support page, users with chats affected by this transition will receive specific instructions on how to archive and download any media or messages they wish to preserve.

To clarify the technical stakes, E2EE is designed to ensure that only the sender and recipient can access the communication. Under this protocol, no third party—including Meta itself—can view or listen to the exchanged content.

Consequently, starting May 9, Meta will technically be able to access and monitor messages and media sent or received on the platform. This change also implies that such data could be made available to government authorities upon legal request.
