BATON ROUGE, La. — The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announced it has been selected for a new federal pilot program aimed at safely introducing next-generation aircraft into communities.
The program, led by the Federal Aviation Administration, will test emerging technologies such as electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, often referred to as air taxis. The initiative seeks to ensure these systems are integrated safely and provide public benefits.
Louisiana’s proposal, titled LIFTOff Louisiana, received support from Gov. Jeff Landry and the state’s congressional delegation. Initial operations will concentrate at the Houma-Terrebonne Airport, but the program is designed to extend across the entire state through public-private partnerships.
“As aviation and technology are continuing to adapt, we want Louisiana to be the leader in innovation,” Landry said.
DOTD Secretary Glenn Ledet stated the program offers the state a chance to lead in aviation innovation while prioritizing safety. He noted that participation is expected to improve mobility and support economic development throughout the state.
Under the pilot, state and local governments will partner with private firms to demonstrate real-world uses, including cargo delivery, passenger transportation and emergency response. All projects will operate under FAA safety oversight. Participants are required to share data regarding noise, safety and environmental impacts to help inform future national policy.
The federal government is not providing funding for the program. Each participant must cover its own costs, while the FAA provides technical guidance and oversight.
