Netflix says the technology is designed to help filmmakers adjust their shots and enhance production.

WASHINGTON — Netflix has acquired InterPositive, an artificial intelligence filmmaking technology company founded by actor and director Ben Affleck, the streaming service announced. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The Los Angeles-based startup has developed AI tools designed to assist filmmakers during production and postproduction. The entire 16-person InterPositive team will join Netflix, and Affleck will serve as a senior adviser to the company.

In a video released with the announcement, Affleck said the technology allows filmmakers to build AI models using footage from their own productions to help complete or adjust shots.

“You can use your own model to remove the wires on stunts, reframe a shot, get a shot you missed, shape the lighting, enhance the backgrounds,” Affleck said.

Affleck said the system is designed to support filmmakers rather than generate content from scratch.

“It’s not about text-prompting or generating something from nothing,” Affleck said. “AI, people mostly think of it as making something from nothing: ‘I’m gonna type something into a computer and it’s gonna give me a movie.’ That’s not what this is.”

Netflix executives said the technology aligns with the company’s approach to artificial intelligence.
