Apple is quietly replacing some recent orders of the M4 Max MacBook Pro with its latest M5-powered machine. Customers who configured high-end M4 Max models only days before the launch of the new M5 model discovered that their orders were canceled and upgraded automatically. Instead of receiving the last-gen chip, several buyers are now scheduled to get upgraded M5 versions.

Reports from users suggest Apple is adjusting recent MacBook Pro orders soon after introducing the M5 Pro and M5 Max processors. Users who selected the M4 Max configuration noticed that their orders were suddenly canceled in the system. However, shortly after, a new order appeared showing an M5 Max model instead.
What’s even more surprising is that the order value remained unchanged. This basically means the buyers were effectively receiving the newer chip generation without paying more. Two buyers shared the experience after their MacBook Pro orders got upgraded. One customer ordered a 14-inch MacBook Pro with a 16-core CPU, 40-core GPU, 64GB memory, and a 1TB SSD under the M4 Max platform. Days later, the order status changed automatically. The original listing disappeared, and a new entry showed an M5 version processing for shipment.
Users are both happy and confused
Apple is reportedly replacing the orders to make sure that the transition to its latest-gen chips happens seamlessly. However, there’s no official statement confirming the reason yet. Another reported case involved a MacBook Air order that was upgraded from an earlier chip to the new generation as well. These reports suggest Apple may be proactively shifting inventory toward the M5 lineup as demand builds.
