According to a report from Yahoo Finance, Google has announced it will increase the frequency of its Chrome browser releases. The company stated that starting in September, it will shift from a four-week to a two-week cycle for major updates.

The tech giant indicated that each new release will include a milestone related to stability, speed, or ease of use. These updates are separate from the weekly security patches that began in 2023. The change means such improvements will now arrive twice as often.

Google officially explained that the accelerated schedule addresses the evolving nature of the web platform, aiming to provide developers with quicker access to new tools. This decision coincides with increased activity from companies creating browsers powered by artificial intelligence, which aim to automate user tasks.

Examples include OpenAI’s ChatGPT Atlas, which incorporates an AI assistant, and Perplexity’s Comet, which offers an AI sidecar for all users and additional automated tools for subscribers. In reaction to these developments, Google has been integrating its Gemini AI more deeply into Chrome to enable similar autonomous features.

While Google stated the schedule change is not directly related to AI competition, the broader competitive landscape appears to be a factor. The new two-week cycle will begin with version 153 for beta and stable channels on desktop and mobile platforms. Early development channels will remain unchanged.

An Extended Stable option with an eight-week update cycle will continue for enterprise administrators and Chromebook users who require more time to manage deployments.
