Apple expands iPhone 17 family with new entry-level model iPhone 17e

With the iPhone 17e, Apple is adding a revamped entry-level model to its current smartphone generation, closing several gaps that were still clearly noticeable in its predecessor. While the external appearance remains largely unchanged and continues to be based on the familiar 6.1-inch form factor with OLED display, Apple has made targeted improvements under the surface. The device continues to be visually based on the design of earlier generations with an aluminum frame and a single main camera, but is intended to be technically closer to the regular iPhone 17 models.

A central component of the update is the A19 chip, which was already introduced in the iPhone 17 in fall 2025. This means that, for the first time, the entry-level model has the same processor as the regular base version of the current series. This not only means higher computing power, but also improvements in energy efficiency, graphics processing, and AI-supported functions. This is complemented by the newer C1X cellular modem developed in-house, which is designed to work more efficiently and enable more stable connections than the previous generation. Apple is thus continuing to pursue its goal of controlling key components itself.

The robustness of the device has also been improved. The front is now equipped with “Ceramic Shield 2,” which, according to the manufacturer, offers greater scratch resistance and is thus on par with the more expensive models. However, the display itself remains a classic 60 Hz display without Always-On function and without Dynamic Island. These features remain reserved for the higher-priced variants. The same applies to the adaptive refresh rates of up to 120 Hz, which are only available in the Pro models.
