There are tons of Linux distros out there, but one that’s been around for a while, offers a unique experience, and doesn’t get much coverage is Q4OS. So what is this four-character operating system, and is it worth trying?
I love trying out Linux distributions, and when I read about Q4OS, I was drawn to it. Retro computing is a ton of fun, and recreations of old-school desktops are both nostalgic and sensible to me. That’s why I wanted to explore Q4OS and share my experience with it.
Q4OS is a general-purpose desktop prioritizing ease of use
The Q4OS Linux distribution is a free general-purpose operating system that’s designed with productivity in mind. Like Windows or macOS, you get a desktop environment with a taskbar, an app launcher, and various PC utilities. Q4OS also emphasizes resource management, meaning it’s one of the better options if you have an older laptop or PC that struggles to manage modern workloads.
Q4OS comes in two different desktop flavors: Plasma and Trinity. You might already know KDE Plasma, as it’s one of the most popular desktop environments out there, and it’s my personal favorite. It’s flexible and power user-friendly, with a whole ecosystem of utilities and apps developed under the same roof. The Trinity desktop environment is a far more traditional one. It seeks to preserves the looks and workflow of Plasma’s predecessor back in the 2000s. Trinity is also designed to avoid proprietary code and to use less resources than Plasma.
