A new student access measure approved Wednesday follows a lawsuit that claimed Indianapolis Public Schools unlawfully impeded federal immigration enforcement.

INDIANAPOLIS — A new policy at Indianapolis Public Schools is focused on student access, safety and privacy.

The measure was approved Wednesday and follows a lawsuit that claimed the school district unlawfully impeded federal immigration enforcement.

“Order matters. Predictability matters. When expectations are clear and consistently applied, schools are safer and learning is stronger,” said IPS board president Hope Duke Star.

Board members say the newly passed policy is meant to bring clarity and reinforces equal access to public education for all students in the district, regardless of race, religion, disability or immigration status.

The policy also protects student record confidentiality, releasing information only when required by law. It enforces a non-discrimination policy that says IPS will not tolerate intimidation, bullying or discrimination against any student and designates the superintendent to develop and carry out the guidelines.

Board members said it reinforces their core mission, educating and supporting students.

“The policy makes clear who is responsible for what and how decisions are made,” Star said.
