According to recent reports, Apple is working on a new wearable AI device that will be about the size of an AirTag and could be worn as a counterpart. Internally, the project is said to be described as a kind of “eyes and ears” for the iPhone. The concept envisages a permanently active wearable device equipped with a camera and microphone that works closely with the user’s smartphone.

In contrast to the conspicuous smart glasses concepts of other providers, Apple is apparently focusing on a discreet design. The planned device will have neither a display nor an integrated projector. Instead, it would capture visual impressions and transmit voice commands, while the actual processing would take place largely on the paired iPhone. An integrated chip, comparable to the solutions built into AirPods or the Apple Watch, could take over basic tasks. Whether the counterpart will have its own speakers has not yet been finalized.

The size, roughly that of an AirTag, suggests a compact, unobtrusive format. Apple is apparently testing two wearing options, either as a clip for attaching to clothing or as a classic pendant on a chain. The target audience is likely to be a niche segment in the growing market for AI-enabled wearables, where restraint and integration into existing ecosystems appear to be more important than spectacular hardware experiments.

At the same time, Apple is reportedly working on further AI enhancements for existing products, such as camera features in future AirPods models. The counterpart would thus fit into a broader strategy of distributing artificial intelligence across multiple devices, while the iPhone remains the central computing and control device.

The project is apparently still in an early stage of development. As with many internal concepts, it cannot be ruled out that Apple will discontinue the work or fundamentally change the product concept. However, the direction clearly shows that the company is looking for new form…
