Passengers flying with five major U.S. airlines may be eligible for TSA’s new optional PreCheck Touchless ID program at 65 additional U.S. airports if they hold PreCheck membership, maintain an active airline profile, and have a valid passport uploaded. The TSA initiative enables travelers to clear security checkpoints using biometric facial recognition as their only form of identification.

Even though the TSA has had to issue a tough “Pay Now” warning about the new Real ID and passport rule for Americans who don’t comply, the agency is addressing passenger privacy concerns about facial scans in the highly successful PreCheck Touchless ID program.

TSA has clarified that it does not use the photos captured during biometric screening for law enforcement or surveillance, and it does not share them with outside agencies. The agency adds that it deletes the image and all associated personal data within 24 hours of the passenger’s scheduled departure.

The five largest U.S. carriers—Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines are participating in TSA’s PreCheck Touchless ID program at select airports. Eligible travelers can choose the voluntary, opt-in facial recognition technology, which significantly speeds up security, with verification taking ten seconds or less, allowing travelers to bypass showing physical IDs, focusing on efficiency for major airlines.
