Eastern Michigan University’s cybersecurity bachelor’s degree program was ranked No. 2 in Michigan by programs.com. Ferris State University took the first slot in the ranking.

Programs.com is a website full of resources for those interested in the cybersecurity industry, specifically dedicated to helping individuals across the United States pick the right degree program based on their needs and interests. 

The site ranks university programs based on course delivery method, tuition cost and number of credits required to complete the bachelor’s degree. The ranking highlighted EMU’s offering of an accelerated bachelor’s and master’s degree pathway, stating that students who demonstrate strong academic performance may transition directly into Eastern’s cybersecurity master’s degree program. The hands-on nature of the program and its STEM-designation also contributed to its high ranking. 

According to its website, EMU’s cybersecurity program focuses on “design, integration, administration, hardening, and protection of all types of computer information systems and network infrastructures in modern cyber environments.” Students engage in hands-on learning to gain experience with real-world scenarios, and strengthen their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. 

Jared Oluoch, director of the School of Information Security and Applied Computing in the GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology, highlighted the impact EMU specifically has had on students with their relatively lower tuition rates and financial aid to help lower income students. EMU’s cybersecurity program also offers scheduling flexibility by offering options for in-person, online and hybrid courses, Oluoch said.
