If you’re a wired Android Auto user, you’re probably used to rampant disconnection issues by now. Thankfully, it looks like a reliable fix has finally arrived in Google’s latest Android Auto update.
The in-car infotainment platform’s USB disconnection issues are believed to be linked to Android’s Advanced Protection Mode, which offers a wide range of protective features, including USB Protection that prevents unauthorized access to your phone’s USB port when your device is locked. At a base level, this feature blocks data and communication through the USB port unless the device is unlocked. Unfortunately, with some phones, this also includes blocking Android Auto from disconnecting entirely or, in some cases, causing frequent disconnects, which can be very frustrating.
With Android Auto v17.2.662614 (via Android Authority), there’s a new option called Start Android Auto While Locked under Android Auto’s settings on devices, along with the subtext “Auto connect over USB is disabled by Advanced Protection Mode. You can still connect wirelessly.” When this feature is enabled, Android Auto should connect instantly and no longer drop frequently.
