I have been fortunate to interview thousands of leaders, and very few introduced themselves to me by saying, “I’m someone who solves problems.” Instead, they identified themselves by their profession. People often tie their identity to what they do rather than to the strengths that allow them to do it well. When I interviewed New York University psychologist Jay Van Bavel, he explained how deeply identity influences the way we think and behave. Later, when former NFL player Anthony Trucks joined my show, he shared how the major transitions in his life forced him to rethink his identity instead of defining himself by a single role.
