Google appears to be preparing a new Android feature that would give users greater control over their cloud backups. The feature, first discovered by Android Authority in November 2025, allows users to individually enable or disable cloud backups for supported apps instead of relying solely on Android’s automatic backup system.
According to a recent report, the feature has now started appearing for a small number of users running the Android beta, suggesting Google has begun limited testing ahead of a wider rollout.
More Control Over Android Backups
Currently, Android automatically backs up data from supported applications to a user’s Google account whenever device backups are enabled. While this simplifies switching to a new phone or restoring data after a factory reset, users have little control over which individual apps are included in those backups.
The upcoming feature could introduce app-level backup management, allowing users to choose exactly which applications should be backed up to the cloud.
Expected capabilities include:
- Enable or disable cloud backups for individual apps
- Exclude selected applications from automatic backups
- Reduce unnecessary cloud storage usage
- Choose which app data is restored when setting up a new device
Spotted in Android Beta
According to a user in AssembleDebug’s Telegram community, the new backup controls have started appearing for some Android beta users. Although availability remains extremely limited, the appearance suggests Google is actively testing the feature beyond its initial discovery.
The functionality was originally uncovered during an APK teardown by Android Authority late last year but had remained hidden until now.
