Surrey council awarded contracts on June 29 that will see 1,003 streetlights in Cloverdale upgraded with LED technology from current high-intensity discharge fixtures.
“When completed, the LED streetlighting will improve nighttime road safety, and reduce energy and electrical maintenance operating costs. Approximately 12,000 HID fixtures will remain for future upgrading,” Surrey’s manager of engineeringScott Neuman explained to council in a corporate report.
Council authorized an $183,690 agreement between city hall and the British Columbia Hydro and Power Authority to support the upgrade, as well as buying 1,003 LED streetlight fixtures from LED Roadway Lighting Ltd. to cost $445,000, and awarded a $142,342 contract to Standard Electric BC Ltd. (with a $157,000 spending limit) for LED streetlight fixture installation.
Neuman said Surrey’s engineering department maintains roughly 35,000 streetlights and of these, approximately 13,000 HID fixtures have yet to be replaced with LED fixtures.
