The Oyo State government has finally published a privacy policy statement on its official website in line with the National Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023 after FIJ reported about its omission.
FIJ reported in April that four out of the six southwestern states violated data privacy laws by running official websites without privacy policies.
At the time, only Lagos and Ogun state governments had complied with the law. When FIJ visited the Oyo government website on Tuesday, we found that a privacy policy statement had been uploaded to the site.
The Privacy Policy statement is now listed under the ‘Navigation’ section in the website’s footer menu. It was not there on April 26 at the time of the initial publication.
This means Oyo has joined the list of three southwestern states with accessible privacy policy statements on their websites, as Ondo, Osun and Ekiti states have still not added any to their main sites.
FIJ can also confirm that the Oyo privacy statement conforms with the provisions of the NDPA as well as the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) Standards and Guidelines for Government Websites, as it details what kind of personal data is collected, the purpose and legal basis for collection, how it is stored and protected and the rights of data subjects, among others.
