Apple’s annual September launch event could look very different this year.
For more than a decade, the company has used its autumn showcase to introduce an entire generation of iPhones at once. But reports surrounding the 2026 lineup point to a significant change in strategy, with premium devices taking centre stage while the standard iPhone model waits until the following year.
If the rumours prove accurate, Apple will focus on high-end hardware in September, headlined by the
iPhone 18 Pro series and the company’s first foldable smartphone, widely tipped to carry the
“iPhone Ultra” branding.

The move would represent one of the biggest departures from Apple’s traditional launch cycle and could allow the company to spotlight its most expensive and technologically ambitious devices.
iPhone Fold and Pro models expected to lead the lineup
iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max
The
iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to arrive with several notable hardware upgrades. Reports suggest Apple will adopt a 2nm process for the A20 Pro chip, bringing improvements in performance and efficiency. The devices are also tipped to feature Apple’s in-house C2 modem.
Design changes could include a smaller Dynamic Island, with some Face ID components reportedly moved beneath the display. Camera enhancements are also said to be in development, with the Pro Max potentially receiving a variable aperture system.
Another feature being linked to the new generation is expanded satellite connectivity. Unlike the current implementation, which is largely limited to emergency services, future models could offer broader internet capabilities through satellite communications.
iPhone Fold
Sharing the spotlight with the Pro models could be
Apple’s first foldable iPhone. Often referred to in leaks as the iPhone Ultra, the device has appeared in several renders and mock-ups over the past few months.
