The United States, through the Foundational Infrastructure for the Responsible Use of Small Modular Reactor Technology (FIRST) program, and Argentina’s National Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA) are co-hosting the Fourth Annual FIRST Latin America and the Caribbean regional workshop in Buenos Aires, Argentina, with generous support from Global Affairs Canada.
FIRST leverages the innovation of the nuclear industry to advance global energy security. It works with countries exploring their nuclear energy potential, including the use of small modular reactors (SMRs) to meet their energy needs while meeting the highest standards of nuclear safety, security, and nonproliferation.
Participants from Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Jamaica, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and the Dominican Republic, as well as other FIRST collaborating partners, including Argentina, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, engaged in discussions on non-electrical applications of SMRs, technology selection, regional perspectives on civil nuclear energy, and the responsible deployment of SMRs in accordance with international best practices.
U.S. Ambassador Peter Lamelas said, “The United States is leading with advanced nuclear technology, and our partnership with Argentina creates jobs, investment, and new opportunities for both our countries. Together, we are proving that the Americas can deliver the nuclear solutions our hemisphere needs.” Assistant Secretary of State Dr. Christopher Yeaw added, “Nuclear energy technologies from the United States and our partners in this room remain the safest, most advanced technologies in the world, and that is why we believe we are the partner of choice for countries seeking to expand their civil nuclear programs. ”
