Google has been tinkering with the same concept on Android for years, but its attempts were downright embarrassing. It was barebones and pretty limited to the mirroring mode.
That changed with the Android 16 March Pixel Drop update. After months of running the beta, Google finally introduced Desktop Mode to the public, a native Android take on Samsung DeX.
Even though Google recently announced the new Aluminum OS, which is set to replace Chrome OS, it’s clear that Desktop Mode is a distinct part of Google’s ambitious push to make Android a viable workstation operating system on its own.
While Aluminum OS is expected to power actual laptop and PC form factors in the future, Desktop Mode is aimed at maximizing phones and tablets.
Android’s native Desktop Mode borrows heavily from Samsung DeX. Tablets like the Google Pixel Tablet get an embedded version, similar to the one on my Galaxy slab.
On the other hand, there’s a mobile version for the Google Pixel 8 and later models that lets you connect a large external monitor to turn it into a workstation or mini-PC setup, which is the one I’ve been using for weeks.
The small form factor means I can slide it into my pocket for a weekend trip and pack a keyboard and mouse. I can then connect my phone to a monitor or TV, essentially bypassing the need to transport a bulky laptop.
It isn’t entirely flawless right out of the gate, but after spending time with it, I am convinced the new Desktop Mode has a shot at being a reliable go-to productivity tool.
