ELKO COUNTY, Nevada, May 18, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — An iPhone crash notification Sunday led rescuers to a small plane at a high elevation in Elko County, Nevada.
The crash notification came in at 10:30 a.m. Sunday to the dispatch center.
“The GPS location indicated the iPhone crash notification was in the East Humboldt Mountain Range and south of Hole in the Mountain Peak,” a news release from the Elko County Sheriff says.
“This is a remote area of Elko County with very limited access.”
Units from the Elko County Sheriff’s Office, Clover Valley Fire Department and MedEx responded, and began making their way up the mountain and towards the GPS location.
“While first responders headed towards the remote area, it was determined there had been a plane crash and the pilot (single occupant) was still alive and had minor injuries.”

The airplane had struck the mountain at approximately 10,200 feet, and was above the snow line. The dense heavy cloud cover and inclement weather at the top of the East Humboldt Mountains hindered visibility and prevented air rescue resources from flying any rescue missions in the morning, the release says.
“First responders made their way on foot to the crash site knowing they may have to carry the pilot off the steep and rugged terrain of the East Humboldt Mountains.

“At approximately 14:30 hours, the heavy cloud cover and inclement weather cleared enough so that a helicopter could be used for rescue operations. With teamwork of the first responders on the ground near the crash site, the injured pilot was safely airlifted off the mountain and transported to medical services.”
The ECSO says teamwork was key to the successful rescue.
“The Elko County Sheriff’s Office would like to say thanks to everyone that helped with this rescue: El Aero Services, Briarpatch Defense Systems, Elko County Search and Rescue, Elko County Regional…
