Apple’s regular iPhone may be getting ready for a very Pro-level change. According to analyst Dan Nystedt, the standard iPhone 18 could come with 12GB of RAM, the same amount reportedly used in the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. If accurate, it would be the first time Apple brings that much memory to its entry-level flagship iPhone.

That may sound like a small spec buried deep inside a phone. But in practical terms, it could decide how smoothly the next wave of Apple Intelligence features works while you are writing a message, editing an image, translating a call, or asking Siri to do more than set a timer.

Why 12GB matters

RAM is the short-term workspace your phone uses to keep apps, files, and background tasks running without slowing down. More of it does not automatically make a phone exciting, but it can make a real difference when software starts juggling heavier jobs.

That is where artificial intelligence comes in. AI tools need space to load models, process requests, and keep the rest of the phone responsive. Nobody wants a phone that feels futuristic in a keynote but stutters when you use it in the middle of a busy day.

A first for the regular iPhone

Nystedt’s claim is especially interesting because Apple has long used memory and chip differences to separate its regular iPhones from the Pro models. The standard iPhone usually gets strong performance, but the biggest hardware cushion often belongs to the more expensive devices.

If the iPhone 18 really jumps to 12GB of RAM, Apple would be narrowing that gap in one very important area. It would also suggest that AI is no longer just a premium feature for users who buy the most expensive iPhone.

Apple Intelligence changes the baseline

Apple already ties Apple Intelligence to newer hardware. The company says Apple Intelligence works on iPhone 15 Pro models, iPhone 16 models or later, and other supported Apple devices, while also requiring 7GB of on-device storage…
