WITH THE ARRIVAL of the new MacBook Neo in March, the MacBook Air’s status as “the world’s most popular laptop” may not remain true for much longer. Luckily, there are still plenty of great reasons to choose this now mid-tier MacBook over Apple’s budget model — even if the changes here are relatively minor this time around.
The MacBook Air (2026) now comes with Apple’s M5 chip, the same one as in the MacBook Pro 14in, although there are some differences in the number of graphics cores you get. While the MacBook Pro’s M5 chip comes with a 10-core GPU by default, the cheapest $1,099 MacBook Air has an 8-core GPU. To get a 10-core GPU on the MacBook Air, then, you’ll need the step-up model which costs $1,199. The “equivalent” MacBook Pro starts at $1,699, although of course, there’s a whole lot more to the latest MacBook Pro than that.
You’ll no doubt notice that the MacBook Air (2026) is also more expensive than its M4 predecessor, which started at $999. That’s because the entry-level model now comes with 512GB of solid-state drive (SDD) storage by default, while its predecessor had 256GB. Having that extra storage will no doubt come in handy — and will also make your new MacBook Air more future-proof, especially with memory and storage prices soaring, thanks to the industry-wide artificial intelligence (Al) boom.
