Linux is often held up as an example of an operating system that is more private and secure than Windows, and not without reason—it does have some distinct advantages. However, Windows hasn’t been totally left behind either. There are several ways that Windows matches, or even surpasses, Linux on the privacy and security front.

However, the data on your local PC is also worth protecting, especially if you have a laptop that you carry around. It could be stolen or lost, conceivably exposing any data you have on it to whoever picks it up.

That is where local drive encryption comes in. Windows will encrypt your boot drive by default now. While it is possible to encrypt your Linux PC, you have to go looking for the setting, which dramatically decreases the likelihood that someone will use it.
