The expansion of browser options for Linux users has taken a significant step forward as Opera officially brings its GX gaming browser to the platform. Long requested by the community, this release aims to provide the same granular hardware control and aesthetic customisation that Windows and macOS users have enjoyed since the browser’s debut in 2019.
The move acknowledges the growing trend of gamers moving away from the traditional dominance of a single operating system. With Microsoft’s Windows becoming increasingly cluttered with telemetry and forced updates often jokingly referred to as “Microslop”, the arrival of dedicated gaming tools on Linux makes the open-source alternative even more viable for those seeking a streamlined experience.

Opera GX is built with the understanding that Linux users typically demand a high degree of transparency and control over how software interacts with their hardware. The browser includes a suite of “GX Control” features, allowing users to set hard limits on how much CPU, RAM, and network bandwidth the browser is permitted to consume. This ensures that web browsing doesn’t interfere with system performance during intensive gaming sessions or compilation tasks.
Privacy remains a core focus, with the browser developed in Europe and adhering to GDPR standards. It features built-in ad and tracker blockers, alongside an optional VPN that operates under a zero-log policy, which has been independently audited by Deloitte.
