{"id":290303,"date":"2026-07-16T11:08:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-16T15:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news-you-need.com\/index.php\/2026\/07\/16\/holyrood-article-ex-presiding-officer-ken-macintosh-to-enter-house-of-lords\/"},"modified":"2026-07-16T14:30:13","modified_gmt":"2026-07-16T18:30:13","slug":"holyrood-article-ex-presiding-officer-ken-macintosh-to-enter-house-of-lords","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news-you-need.com\/index.php\/2026\/07\/16\/holyrood-article-ex-presiding-officer-ken-macintosh-to-enter-house-of-lords\/","title":{"rendered":"Holyrood Article | Ex-Presiding Officer Ken Macintosh to enter House of Lords"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.holyrood.com\/news\/view,expresiding-officer-ken-macintosh-to-enter-house-of-lords\">Holyrood Article | Ex-Presiding Officer Ken Macintosh to enter House of Lords<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.holyrood.com\/news\/view,expresiding-officer-ken-macintosh-to-enter-house-of-lords\">https:\/\/www.holyrood.com\/news\/view,expresiding-officer-ken-macintosh-to-enter-house-of-lords<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Publish Date: <a href=\"publish_date]\">2026-07-16 11:08:00<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Source Domain: <a href=\"www.holyrood.com\">www.holyrood.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Former presiding officer Ken Macintosh has been included in Keir Starmer\u2019s resignation honours list.<\/p>\n<p>The former MSP will now enter the House of Lords as a life peer.<\/p>\n<p>One of the Scottish Parliament\u2019s original intake in 1999, Macintosh served as an MSP for both the Eastwood constituency and West Scotland region before standing down in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>He ran for leadership of the Scottish Labour Party in 2011, coming second to Johann Lamont, and then again in 2015, when he was runner-up to Kezia Dugdale.<\/p>\n<p>Born in Inverness, the former TV producer was elected as presiding officer in 2016, defeating rivals including Lamont.<\/p>\n<p>He is amongst 26 people nominated to enter the Lords as Starmer steps down from government.<\/p>\n<p>The Labour PM will hand over power to Andy Burnham on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Macintosh is one of 16 nominations by Starmer, with others including London mayor Sadiq Khan and Christina McAnea, former general secretary of Unison.<\/p>\n<p>Ex-TV presenter June Sarpong and economist Kitty Ussher are also amongst his selection.<\/p>\n<p>There are five nominations from Lib Dem leader Ed Davey and three from Kemi Badenoch of the Conservatives, with former civil service head Chris Wormald and Sir Brian Levenson, who led an inquiry into press ethics, nominated for crossbench peerages.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on his peerage, Macintosh said: &#8220;First and foremost I want to say what a privilege it is to be given the opportunity once more to serve the people of Scotland and now the whole of the UK too.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As someone who is being honoured for their parliamentary service rather than their role as a government minister, I see this peerage as welcome recognition of the central role of the Scottish Parliament in our public life.
