\n\t\t\t\t\t\tFlock Safety cameras, the special License Plate Readers used by law enforcement to track stolen tags, are at the center of a public debate over surveillance and privacy.If you look up, you can find the Flock along busy roadways or in neighborhoods. Unlike surveillance cameras, these are not discreet, and the camera is hallmarked by its position attached to the top of a tall pole, and above it, a solar panel. How do law enforcement agencies use Flock cams?Several agencies in the Upstate implemented these cameras years ago, which connect them to a nationwide database. Through the software, they have been able to catch homicide suspects, track victims in amber alerts and evade suicide attempts.”Each time a car is passing, this camera right here is taking a quick picture of the tag. It’s search to see if that car is stolen. If there’s nothing, they just go down the road, “Anderson Chief of Police Jim Stewart said.If a stolen tag is detected, it takes seconds to alert officers by phone. “Dispatch gets the same text. They send it out on the radio. And if officers are in this area, we will encounter that vehicle quickly,” Stewart said.WYFF News 4 reached out to six Upstate agencies.
