While iOS 27 is very much the new focus for pre-release software, Apple is still preparing iOS 26.6 as the next iPhone update. Apple has released the fifth iOS 26.6 developer beta. iOS 26.6 beta has been in testing since the end of May.<\/p>\n

iOS 26.6 features and changes<\/h2>\n

So far, we\u2019ve discovered two notable changes in iOS 26.6 beta.\u00a0<\/p>\n

First, there\u2019s a\u00a0change around the limit\u00a0on the number of contacts you can block. Second, there appears to be a new\u00a0anti-theft iPhone feature\u00a0in the works.<\/p>\n

The update also may prepare the Spotlight index on iPhone and iPad that Siri AI will use in iOS 27.<\/p>\n

We don\u2019t expect much else in terms of new features and functionality as all attention now turns to iOS 27.<\/p>\n

Apple\u2019s next major software update will reach customers in September as Apple iterates on iOS 27 over the summer.<\/p>\n

iOS 26.6 will be the next shipping version, building on iOS 26 and the subsequent releases that have followed since last fall.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Last year, iOS 18.6 beta 1 arrived\u00a0after\u00a0iOS 26 beta 1. That means iOS 26.6 is a bit ahead of schedule compared to Apple\u2019s 2025 release cycle.<\/p>\n

9to5Mac\u2019s Take<\/h2>\n

iOS 26.6 beta 5 today means iOS 26.6 will likely be publicly released at the end of July. We could see the first release candidate with release notes arrive in a way, followed by an official release a week later. <\/p>\n

Meanwhile, iOS 27 remains the focus for the next big update. We expect the first public beta version to arrive as soon as this week, followed by the fourth developer beta version next week, if we had to guess.<\/p>\n

iOS 27 won\u2019t be officially released outside of the preview beta cycle until September. For non-beta testers, iOS 26.5 is current, and iOS 26.6 will be what carries most users through to fall. <\/p>\n
