OpenAI\u2019s<\/span> safety head is reportedly leaving the company amid a larger leadership shakeup.<\/span><\/p>\n

Johannes Heidecke<\/span>, the artificial intelligence startup\u2019s head of safety systems, informed staff last week of his departure, according to a Friday (July 10) Wired <\/span>report<\/span>. His departure comes after a reorganization aimed at melding OpenAI\u2019s safety and research teams.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a memo to staff seen by Wired, Chief Research Officer <\/span>Mark Chen<\/span> said the company\u2019s safety teams will now report to the OpenAI\u2019s Vice President of Research and Head of Alignment <\/span>Mia Glaese<\/span>, who will take on a new and larger role as VP of research and safety.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Saachi Jain<\/span>, who had led safety teams at OpenAI, will move into the role of interim head of safety systems, reporting to Glaese, Wired added.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe demands on safety continue to increase \u2014 we are training models at a much faster cadence, and release cycles have come down greatly in turn,\u201d Chen wrote in the memo. \u201cAs a result, we have bigger coordination challenges around safety today than ever before.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

As Wired noted, Heidecke joined the company in 2021 as an AI safety analyst. Three years later, he became OpenAI\u2019s head of safety systems when the previous head, <\/span>Lilian Weng<\/span>, left to co-found the AI startup <\/span>Thinking Machines Lab<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re grateful for Johannes\u2019 contributions to OpenAI,\u201d Chen said in a statement to Wired. \u201cIt\u2019s important that our safety work is integrated with frontier-model development, with an earlier and more direct role in shaping key model, product and launch decisions. We\u2019re excited for this next chapter under Mia Glaese\u2019s leadership across research and safety.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The news came the same day as a CNBC report that OpenAI President and Co-Founder Greg Brockman would be <\/span>taking over leadershi<\/span>p of the company\u2019s ChatGPT product business following the departure of Fidji Simo.<\/span><\/p>\n
