WASHINGTON (TNND) \u2014 <\/span>A new social media video from the American Civil Liberties Union is drawing criticism after it offered guidance to protesters on privacy and phone use, including steps such as turning off devices and limiting what is shared publicly.<\/p>\n

The video, titled \u201cKnow Your Rights: Privacy at Protests,\u201d was posted in June and described by the ACLU as a resource to help protesters \u201cprotect yourself before, during and after a protest.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the video, the ACLU’s Senior Policy Counsel Chad Marlow said, \u201cProtesting is a public act, but public acts are not the best for protecting your privacy. Especially from a government that may not appreciate your point of view.<\/p>\n

The video covers multiple topics, including what to post, filming police, and turning off tracking information. It also includes guidance about communicating on different platforms.<\/p>\n

If you’re protesting and not actively using your phone, the best thing you can do to prevent it from sharing information about you and your location is to shut it off entirely,” Marlow said. <\/p>\n

Independent journalist and author Andy Ngo told The National News Desk Thursday that he believes multiple aspects of the video are concerning, including a section advising protestors to communicate on different platforms. <\/p>\n

To switch to encrypted forms where it provides methods and tactics for people to delete evidence of their participation in protest,” Ngo said.<\/p>\n

Plus, Ngo said what’s most concerning is direction from the ACLU to not live stream these protests. Noting that while privacy is extremely important, the advice is revealing.<\/p>\n

I think what they’re saying, not through their own words, is that there’s criminal activity that’s happening in these live stream videos, can capture it and that may be used as evidence to prosecute your comrades that we’re sympathetic to,\u201d Ngo said.<\/p>\n
