Apple\u2019s next iPhone software, iOS 27, is promised for this month, July 2026. Apple hasn\u2019t specified exactly when, but there are clues. Here\u2019s what to expect and when, plus whether it\u2019s worth downloading as soon as possible or waiting for the general release. <\/p>\n

The Path To The September General Release<\/h2>\n

Let\u2019s work backwards: the general release will come in September, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro \u2014 read this for the expected timeline for hardware, software and reviews. <\/p>\n

So, you could wait for that, and in terms of the iPhone you use every day, you should. Apple stresses that until then, this is beta software and problems can arise. It\u2019s likely that there will be glitches, such as apps that haven\u2019t been updated to work smoothly with the new beta software, or battery life that\u2019s not always reliable, for instance. <\/p>\n

But if you have a second iPhone, and it\u2019s an iPhone 11 or more recent, including iPhone SE second- and third-generation, then you can download and install iOS 27. Basically, if your iPhone can run iOS 26, it can handle iOS 27 \u2014 though Apple Intelligence is only available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and later.<\/p>\n

Apple’s Historical Beta Timeline<\/h2>\n

Apple iOS 27 has already hit its second developer beta. Read this for how to download the developer beta (with the same caveats about not using your main driver). You can also read the full iOS 27 schedule here. The third developer beta expected soon. Historically, the first public beta is based on that third dev beta and lands about a week after it. However, that\u2019s not what happened last year. <\/p>\n

In 2025, perhaps because of the complexity of the new Liquid Glass design, Apple chose to hold the public beta until after the fourth developer beta. This was an anomaly \u2014 unless it happens…<\/p>\n
