Slightly more than half <\/span>of cybersecurity professionals think AI <\/span>is helping attackers more than <\/span>defenders, according to Bitdefender\u2019s <\/span>newly released 2026 Cybersecurity <\/span>Assessment Report. But the report\u2019s <\/span>most striking finding concerns not <\/span>technology at all, but organisational <\/span>behaviour: 55.2 per cent of respondents <\/span>who experienced a security incident or <\/span>breach in the previous twelve months <\/span>said they were told to keep it <\/span>confidential, even though they believed <\/span>it should have been reported to <\/span>authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n

The trajectory of that <\/span>figure is what makes it genuinely <\/span>alarming. It rose sharply from 42 per <\/span>cent in 2023 to 57.6 per cent in 2025, <\/span>before plateauing this year at 55.2 per <\/span>cent, essentially unchanged. <\/span>Bitdefender\u2019s own analysts described <\/span>that plateau as arguably just as <\/span>troubling as the initial spike, since <\/span>it suggests the surge in concealment <\/span>pressure has now become entrenched <\/span>rather than reversing. The United <\/span>States led every region measured, with <\/span>68.6 per cent of American respondents <\/span>reporting they were told to conceal a <\/span>reportable breach, compared with 57.2 <\/span>per cent in both Germany and the United <\/span>Kingdom. Notably, the pressure to stay <\/span>silent was not confined to any single <\/span>organisational tier: managers reported <\/span>facing this pressure at 56.8 per cent, <\/span>closely mirrored by practitioners at <\/span>53.5 per cent, indicating the culture <\/span>of concealment runs through entire <\/span>organisations rather than being imposed <\/span>top-down or bottom-up alone.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Regulatory Paradox: Stricter <\/span>Rules, Same Behaviour<\/span><\/h3>\n

What makes this <\/span>finding particularly notable is the <\/span>regulatory backdrop against which it is <\/span>occurring. Bitdefender\u2019s analysts <\/span>pointed out that while organisations <\/span>are working to incorporate US and <\/span>European breach-disclosure regulations, <\/span>cultural change has not kept pace with <\/span>policy change, an acknowledgement that <\/span>tightening legal requirements alone <\/span>have not been sufficient to shift <\/span>entrenched organisational instincts <\/span>around disclosure.<\/span><\/p>\n
