Mikie Sherrill (D) signed the bill on June 30, after it cleared the state Assembly along party lines, with Democrats in favor, earlier in the day. The law bans the sale of sensitive personal data, requires brokers to register with a new public database and sets the highest annual registration fees in the nation. <\/p>\n<p>Sherrill is also set to consider a slate of other privacy bills passed by the state legislature Tuesday, including a kids online safety bill and a ban on surveillance pricing for groceries. A spokesperson for the governor declined to comment on whether she plans to sign the legislation. She has previously indicated support for legislation in both areas.<\/p>\n<p>The children\u2019s safety bill would establish sweeping obligations for tech companies to prevent foreseeable harm to minors and adopts an age-appropriate design code similar to those facing legal challenges in other states. <\/p>\n<p>A ban on grocery surveillance pricing would make New Jersey the third state to regulate the personal data-based pricing scheme.<\/p>\n<p>The new data broker law bans brokers of all sizes from selling sensitive data, including personal data revealing race or ethnic origin, health conditions, financial information, sexual orientation and immigration status, along with genetic, biometric and geolocation data.
