NORFOLK, VA, July 01, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — For years, professionals seeking a doctorate in cybersecurity had few options beyond computer science or engineering. Old Dominion University is opening a new path.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0University\u2019s nationally recognized School of Cybersecurity has launched a\u00a0new Ph.D.\u00a0in cybersecurity\u00a0designed to prepare the next generation of cyber leaders, researchers and educators\u00a0as the world faces new\u00a0and complex security challenges.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Ph.D. program will highlight the interdisciplinary nature of the rapidly evolving field of cybersecurity, with artificial intelligence\u00a0and other emerging technologies.\u00a0\u00a0Students from a wide range of educational and professional backgrounds are encouraged to contribute diverse perspectives that advance cybersecurity research.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe coursework and research pathways are designed for people from different backgrounds,\u201d said Daniel Takabi, Ph.D., professor, director of the School of Cybersecurity and Batten Endowed Chair of Cybersecurity. \u201cOur Ph.D. program offers advanced technical specializations,\u00a0alongside comprehensive pathways in strategic cybersecurity management, policy, legal and human factors in cybersecurity.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

This unique program is among the first of its kind in the nation and the only Ph.D. in cybersecurity in\u00a0Virginia.\u00a0It\u00a0also\u00a0represents\u00a0a new phase of growth for the school, which celebrated its\u00a010th\u00a0anniversary this year.\u00a0Dr. Takabi touted the school\u2019s expanding programs in cybersecurity and artificial intelligence,\u00a0as well as\u00a0research efforts to advance the\u00a0University\u2019s national reputation as a R1\u00a0research\u00a0institution.
