Anthropic has said the US commerce department has lifted export controls on its Fable and Mythos AI models, less than \u2060three weeks after \u2060the company \u200bwas ordered to suspend access to its most advanced AI models over national security risks.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll begin restoring access tomorrow,\u201d Anthropic said in a statement on X late on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

US authorities blocked access to the models on national security grounds several weeks ago, but in a letter to Anthropic seen by Reuters, US commerce secretary Howard Lutnick, said the export controls were withdrawn and that a licence \u200cwas no longer required for their export.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnthropic has agreed to proactively detect and address security \u200brisks associated with the models; to work diligently with the US government on protocols and standards and releases for Mythos, Fable, and future models; and to inform the US government of any malicious activity,\u201d Lutnick said.<\/p>\n

The US has stepped up oversight \u2060of new AI releases to identify potential threats amid concerns that the advanced models that are driving the sector\u2019s boom and major \u2060capital investments could be misused by military intelligence users in China, Russia or other \u200bcountries of concern.<\/p>\n

Anthropic abruptly \u200cdisabled its Mythos 5 \u200cand Fable 5 models following the export-control order on 12 June. On \u200cFriday, the US government allowed it to release Mythos 5 to some \u201ctrusted\u201d US organisations, partially reversing the order.<\/p>\n

The US government\u2019s vetting of \u2060which companies can gain access to the models has drawn criticism.<\/p>\n

OpenAI \u200bCEO Sam Altman \u200bsaid last week \u200bthat extensive safety testing \u201cis not a bad idea. I just \u200bdon\u2019t like the \u200cidea of the government \u200bpicking the \u200bcustomers.\u201d<\/p>\n

ChatGPT-maker OpenAI delayed a full public launch of GPT-5.6 at the US government\u2019s request, limiting its access to a small group of vetted partners.<\/p>\n
