According to fresh insights from Bloomberg\u2019s Mark Gurman, Apple is planning a two-step approach for the Mac Studio over the next couple of years. While a smaller refresh is still expected to land later this year, the truly significant leap in performance and internal design is not slated to arrive until 2028.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Apple is reportedly readying a Mac Studio refresh for 2026, which will feature the M5 Ultra chip. This refresh was originally targeted for an earlier release this year but faced delays due to a combination of rising component costs and supply chain constraints surrounding memory chips.<\/p>\n

The most notable shift in Apple\u2019s strategy is the decision to entirely bypass the M6 Ultra chip. Gurman notes that Apple is cancelling its high-end M6 Pro and M6 Max variants, choosing instead to focus solely on a base M6 chip for this year before transitioning its high-performance silicon directly to the M7 lineup. This break in tradition means the Mac Studio will jump straight from the M5 Ultra to the M7 Ultra.<\/p>\n

The shift is largely driven by Apple\u2019s aggressive pivot toward silicon optimized for on-device AI and highly demanding GPU workloads. By skipping the middle generation, Apple is aligning its desktop roadmap with the debut of its next-generation architecture.<\/p>\n

The real headline for power users is the 2028 model. This version is expected to debut the M7 Ultra chip and will feature a completely reworked internal architecture.<\/p>\n

The standout improvement in this future model is a brand-new heat sink system designed to drastically enhance thermal performance. As Apple\u2019s Ultra chips continue to scale up in power, heat management has become a critical focal point. This thermal upgrade should allow the machine to sustain peak performance for longer periods without throttling.<\/p>\n
