The switch to a tandem OLED panel is expected to usher in a new era of vibrant displays, replacing DCI-P3 with the much larger BT.2020 color space.

Rumors have been circulating for years that Apple will increasingly rely on OLED panels in the future. The iPad Pro ($1,199 on Amazon) already uses a tandem OLED panel, the MacBook Ultra is expected to follow suit as early as fall 2026, and an iMac with a similar panel is set to hit the market at a later date.

According to the latest information from TrendForce, Apple aims to use the switch to OLED not only to enable thinner, more energy-efficient, and brighter displays, but above all to create screens capable of displaying a significantly wider range of colors. While most Apple products can fully reproduce the DCI-P3 color space, future OLED panels are expected to be able to reproduce at least 95 percent of the BT.2020 color space. This is a significant upgrade, as BT.2020 covers approximately 75 percent of the colors perceivable by the human eye, compared to only about 50 percent for DCI-P3.

With near-complete coverage of the BT.2020 color space, the MacBook Ultra is also far better equipped to accurately display HDR content for modern 4K and 8K TVs, so that, for example, color correction of a video can be performed directly on the laptop’s display instead of on an external professional monitor. The TrendForce report shows that Apple will not only focus on brightness, speed, and resolution when switching to OLED – areas in which the current MacBook Pro’s Mini-LED display already performs well, even though the response time in our test was modest.

Since 2009 I have written for different publications with a focus on consumer electronics.
