technology<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/future\/technology\/2026\/06\/26\/ibm-stock-chip-semiconductor-ai\/\">https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/future\/technology\/2026\/06\/26\/ibm-stock-chip-semiconductor-ai\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Publish Date: <a href=\"publish_date]\">2026-06-26 12:33:00<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Source Domain: <a href=\"www.thenationalnews.com\">www.thenationalnews.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-0-CEBUNQYSCFED5J5B4WGJT2YJKM\"><span data-translator-highlight-target=\"true\">IBM mainframe computers often fill entire rooms, but the company says its latest innovation puts \u201cnearly 100 billion transistors on to a chip the size of a fingernail\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-1-4GI55F2C6VESBOAUUZ5N65GEWM\"><span data-translator-highlight-target=\"true\">The US technology giant describes its chip technology as revolutionary and says it will be perfect for the demands of the artificial intelligence boom. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-3-435IPHCOANBIZFY7EUBK564LGA\"><span data-translator-highlight-target=\"true\">An announcement from IBM on Thursday unveiled \u201cthe world&#8217;s first sub-1 nanometre chip technology\u201d, adding that it showcases how \u201ccontinued gains in performance and efficiency remain possible\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-4-YBDLCOKLNRDATH3UAS6BN2Z5DM\"><span data-translator-highlight-target=\"true\">Jay Gambetta, director of IBM research, said the chip technology was a significant advance on several levels. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-6-CA5TTKOS4NCZDCFTOZZPWFXYAI\"><span data-translator-highlight-target=\"true\">\u201cIt marks a landmark moment in computing, pushing technology beyond the nanometre era to the scale of atoms,\u201d he explained. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-7-AM2BFDCZWFFUFATBXXH2IT6SMI\"><span data-translator-highlight-target=\"true\">\u201cWith our new nanostack architecture, we\u2019re not just making smaller transistors, we\u2019re reinventing how chips are built to deliver dramatically more power and energy efficiency.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-8-YUNUQAALTVBCVEJY7IUMKLTYTY\"><span data-translator-highlight-target=\"true\">That push for more efficiency comes as data centres, central to AI expansion, are placing a tremendous burden on energy grids around the world. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-9-SCU7WP7KKVGQXN7EUTCCRLCDAE\"><span data-translator-highlight-target=\"true\">According to IBM, it expects for the sub-1 nanometre chip technology to go into production within the next five years. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-11-LBUYSXWGG5HPJNLWKEITRTDLXU\"><span data-translator-highlight-target=\"true\">IBM&#8217;s announcement comes weeks after the company turned 115 years old. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-12-XMZHHQL5UNFJZDAW36TPLBSWKY\"><span data-translator-highlight-target=\"true\">Widely known as \u201cBig Blue\u201d because of its logo designed by graphic designer Paul Rand, the company has long been synonymous with mainframe computers and office electronics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-14-NEQXGMEH5FG47CGVG7HZJS3NIY\"><span data-translator-highlight-target=\"true\">It joined the personal computer boom in 1981, and even tried its hand at selling operating systems such as OS2. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-15-SXMYHQ2BVRGJZNI6EIFQMVZ74Q\"><span data-translator-highlight-target=\"true\">IBM, headquartered in Armonk, New York state, sold its personal computer assets to Lenovo, and now focuses on AI cloud computing, consulting, quantum computer hardware and technology research. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-16-GEQGLIM5QVASVL5Q7EEG5C23X4\"><span data-translator-highlight-target=\"true\">This is far from the company&#8217;s first foray into semiconductors.
