Winners of the NEA coding competition,\u00a0Syrra\u00a0Team 1\u00a0<\/p>\n

The OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) organised a coding competition that challenged participants to translate messy, unstructured construction data into machine readable data. In total,\u00a040\u00a0teams\u00a0participated\u00a0with the winners flying to Jeju Island, Korea to join the NEA\u00a0International Workshop on Artificial Intelligence for Nuclear Energy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The rise of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>artificial intelligence (<\/span><\/span><\/span>AI<\/span><\/span>)<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0comes\u00a0<\/span><\/span>a<\/span>s governments and industry pursue ambitious nuclear new build programmes to triple nuclear\u00a0<\/span><\/span>capacity\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>by 2050<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>AI is being explored\u00a0<\/span>as a means to<\/span>\u00a0improve decision making across all aspect<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0of nuclear power plants including in the management of construction risk<\/span>s<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>one of<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0priorit<\/span><\/span>ies<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0for the sector<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0<\/span><\/span>NEA\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>coding competition<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>provided<\/span>\u00a0an opportunity\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>to engage with and connect an\u00a0<\/span>exciting<\/span>\u00a0wave of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>young\u00a0<\/span>AI\u00a0<\/span>talent<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>the nuclear\u00a0<\/span>energy\u00a0<\/span>sector<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Competition\u00a0design\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0coding\u00a0competition was designed to provide hands-on experience to students with a real-world problem that had practical applications in\u00a0nuclear\u00a0energy\u00a0sector. The NEA\u00a0chose risk registers, a widely used tool for managing risk in construction projects, as the\u00a0focus\u00a0of the competition. In practice, risk registers come in many different formats, often\u00a0with unstructured information that is difficult for computers to read and understand. Participants were therefore tasked with automating the\u00a0conversion of these registers into structured, machine-readable data. The winning approach included\u00a0large language models (LLMs)\u00a0and prompt engineering along with strong coding implementation to produce outputs that closely matched an expert-developed gold standard.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
