They have fallen about 11% so far this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The announcement comes at a time when chipmakers are searching for ways to maintain the decades-long trend of cramming more computing power into smaller spaces, a phenomenon \u200cknown as Moore&#8217;s Law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The new \u2060chip technology, which bolsters IBM&#8217;s position to compete with contract chipmakers TSMC and Intel, has a transistor architecture of \u20600.7 nanometers, or 7 angstroms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Last week, Intel said the new generation of its 18A manufacturing process, which makes 1.8 nanometer chips, moved into risk production, \u200bthe testing \u200bphase before commercial manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">IBM said the \u200b0.7-nanometer chip packs nearly 100 \u200cbillion transistors onto a fingernail-sized surface, about twice the density of its 2-nanometer chip unveiled in 2021, delivering up to 50% higher performance or 70% greater energy efficiency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">To get there, IBM developed a new transistor design called &#8220;nanostack&#8221;. Instead of laying transistors flat, the design stacks them on top of \u200ceach other in three dimensions, fitting more \u200binto the same volume of space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;With our \u200bnew nanostack architecture, we\u2019re not \u200bjust making smaller transistors, we\u2019re reinventing how chips are \u200cbuilt to deliver dramatically more power and \u200benergy efficiency,\u201d director \u200bof IBM Research Jay Gambetta said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">IBM says production could begin within five years. The company has previously licensed chip technologies to Samsung and \u200bJapan&#8217;s Rapidus.
