Alphabet\u2019s stock fell 5% on June 22, 2026, marking its worst day in over a year, as the company lost two of its most prominent artificial intelligence researchers to rival firms in consecutive days. The talent exodus comes as a rare joint warning from Five Eyes cybersecurity agencies signals that AI-powered cyber threats could overwhelm current defenses within months.<\/p>\n

Google\u2019s vice president of engineering and Gemini AI co-lead Noam Shazeer announced on June 18 that he was leaving for OpenAI. \u201cI\u2019m excited to share that I\u2019ll be joining OpenAI and look forward to working with the exceptional team there,\u201d Shazeer said in a post on X, adding that the decision to depart was difficult.<\/p>\n

Shazeer\u2019s departure came less than two years after Google brought him back to its DeepMind unit in August 2024 as part of a partnership with Character.AI, the startup he co-founded after leaving Google in 2021. The company had paid $2.7 billion to acquire his team at Character.AI.<\/p>\n

Two days later, on June 19, John Jumper, DeepMind\u2019s vice president and engineering fellow, announced he was leaving after nine years to join Anthropic. Jumper, who won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry alongside Google\u2019s Demis Hassabis for AlphaFold, is best known as co-creator of the breakthrough AI that has predicted more than 200 million protein structures, cutting years off biological and medical research.<\/p>\n

The consecutive exits underscore intense competition for top AI talent among technology companies. Bloomberg reported that Jumper had been a key member of Google\u2019s AI coding development team, and his departure strains the company\u2019s efforts to compete with Anthropic and OpenAI.<\/p>\n

Alphabet has been spending heavily on artificial intelligence infrastructure, raising $141 billion in debt and equity since October 2025 and raising its 2026 capital expenditure guidance to $180 billion to $190 billion.
